What is a Google Play gift card?
Google Play gift cards are also called Google Play codes, Google Play vouchers or Play Store cards. They are all the same thing — a prepaid code worth a fixed amount in one currency. When you redeem it, that amount is added to the Google Play balance of the Google account you are signed in with.
The balance belongs to the account, not to one phone. Any Android phone or tablet signed in to the same Google account can spend it, and so can the Google Play website. It cannot be moved to another Google account once it has been redeemed.
What you can buy with Google Play balance
- Paid apps and games from the Play Store.
- In-app purchases inside Android games and apps — gems, coins, battle passes, character packs and other in-game currency sold through Google Play billing.
- Subscriptions that are billed through Google Play, including subscriptions to apps you already use.
- Other digital content Google Play sells in your country. What is on offer varies from country to country.
Google Play balance is for digital content in Google Play. It does not pay for phones, speakers or other hardware from the Google Store, and it cannot be cashed out or sent to another account.
If you play on an iPhone or iPad, a Google Play card is the wrong card: iOS apps are paid through Apple. See Apple gift cards instead.
Google Play card regions: why the country matters
One rule decides whether a code works: a Google Play gift card only redeems on an account whose Google Play country matches the country the card was issued for. A card for Germany works on a Google Play account set to Germany, a UK card on a UK account, a US card on a US account. The country printed on every card on this page is the country it redeems in.
Your Google Play country is linked to the payments profile of your Google account and usually follows the country where you set it up. The balance is held in that country's currency, which is why a card in a different currency or for a different country is refused.
