What is an Apple gift card?
Apple has sold its prepaid cards under several names over the years: iTunes cards, App Store & iTunes gift cards and, more recently, the Apple Gift Card. Whatever the name on the listing, the code works the same way once redeemed: the amount is added to your Apple Account balance in that country's currency.
The balance belongs to your Apple Account (formerly called Apple ID), not to a device. Every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in with that account can spend it.
What you can buy with Apple Account balance
- Apps and games from the App Store, and in-app purchases inside them — including in-game currency for many mobile games.
- Subscriptions billed by Apple, such as Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade, as well as many third-party app subscriptions.
- Music, films and books sold through Apple's own stores, where they are available in your country.
In some countries the newer Apple Gift Card can also be used for Apple products. What a card covers in your country is shown on Apple's own website; once a code is on your Apple Account, it works as App Store and media balance as described here.
Apple gift card regions: why the country matters
Apple cards are tied to a country. An Apple, App Store or iTunes card can only be redeemed on an Apple Account whose country or region matches the country the card was issued for. A UK card works on a UK Apple Account, a US card on a US account, a German card on a German account. The country printed on every card on this page is the country it redeems in.
The account country also sets the currency of your balance and the App Store you see. Apple lets you change an account's country only under conditions — among them, any remaining balance has to be spent first — so it is far simpler to buy the card that matches the account you already use.
How to check your Apple Account country
- On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store and look at the currency prices are shown in.
