What is an Amazon gift card?
An Amazon gift card — also called an Amazon voucher, Amazon gift code or Amazon claim code — is a prepaid code worth a fixed amount in one currency. When you redeem it, the amount is added to the gift card balance of your Amazon account on the site that issued the card, and that balance is used at checkout on that site.
The balance pays for eligible items on that Amazon site. Each Amazon site publishes its own gift card terms, including which items and services a balance can or cannot be used for, so check the terms on your Amazon site if you plan to use the balance for something other than ordinary purchases.
Amazon gift cards are shopping credit, not cash: once redeemed, the balance cannot be withdrawn or sent to another account.
Amazon gift card countries: one card, one Amazon site
This is the rule that matters most: an Amazon gift card can only be redeemed and spent on the Amazon website of the country that issued it. A card for Germany works on amazon.de, a UK card on amazon.co.uk, a US card on amazon.com. The country printed on every card on this page tells you which Amazon site it belongs to.
It does not matter where you live — what matters is which Amazon site you order from. Someone living in Austria who shops on amazon.de needs a German card. Someone in Ireland who shops on amazon.co.uk needs a UK card.
One login, several Amazon sites
Your Amazon sign-in may work on more than one Amazon website, but the gift card balance does not travel with it. A balance redeemed on amazon.de is only spendable on amazon.de; it will not appear at checkout on amazon.fr or amazon.co.uk. If you shop on more than one Amazon site, buy a separate card for each site you want to spend on, and check the Gift cards page of each site to see what balance is held there.
How to tell which Amazon site you use
- Look at the web address you shop on — the ending (.de, .co.uk, .com, .fr, .it, .es and so on) is the site your card must match.
